On a warm summer's evening the Bridgewater Hall resounded to the sound of hymns and stirring brass band playing as 1300 people enjoyed the Diocesan Evening of Celebration hosted by Mothers' Union.
The audience was charmed by the magnificent playing of the Smithills School Senior Band who played medleys including "Lake of The Moon" by Kevin Houben.
The Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch, conducted the band for the singing of some of the hymns, and the favourite hymn, as voted for in an online poll, was announced to be 'Great is Thy Faithfulness', with 40% of the vote.
Canon Roger Royle entertained the audience with stories of his youth, his parallel careers as a parish priest and a radio presenter, and snippets about his own favourite hymns and popular songs (Shirley Bassey amongst them!).
This website was launched with fun and games over the exact spelling of the website address.
The evening concluded with a collection for the Bishop's Lenten Appeal for the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. So far, £3500 has been raised.
