Bishop's DRC Appeal raises £4000

The Bishop of Manchester's Lent Appeal for the people of Nord Kivu raised over £4000.

Barbara Taylor, President of Manchester Mothers' Union received an e-mail from Phoebe Kayeye, Mothers' Union President of the Diocese of North Kivu. It said:

"On behalf of the Mothers' Union members of North Kivu Diocese, I would like to extend our sincere thanks for all your continued prayers. The situation here in North Kivu is a little bit calm although there are still some insecure areas where homes are attacked, robbed of their property, or burnt, but at least it is not as bad as it was before.

About sheep that were bought: There are now 12 beneficiaries from that project. However, there have been some problems in looking after them. Some pigs have gone down with a disease and it has become very expensive to keep them. We are advised to have medicine for them and it is very expensive to buy because it is imported.

We still have so many displaced people around us who need our support and help. We are not able to help them all.

As our friends in Christ, we would like to ask for your continued prayers and support.

About 375 of our fellow women here were raped by rebels during the war. After rape, they are stigmatised, some of them have HIV/AIDS and are neglected by their husbands. These people are in great need, some of them have babies. Some sleep on verandas in town, others went back to live with their parents which is not easy at all. It is not easy to tell their story.  The money you are now able to send will help us to buy some food, blankets and clothes for these women who have beeen raped.

Mary Sumner House helped us to buy some blankets for the displace people. It was so wonderful because now people here know that Mothers' Union exists here and around the world."
