Letter from Maseno South

Published: 11 February 2010

We received Kshs. 375.000 relief from MSH last year.  We used this to buy maize which we distributed to the most needy members in our community at 10kg per person.  So we reached about 500 members.  You can't imagine the joy in their faces during this ministry.

Unfortunately immediately after the long spell of drought, flash floods came towards the end of December running to the first week of January which has swept away part our our Diocese in Nyando District.  About 13 parishes are affected most of them displaced from their swept away homes.  They are without food and shelter.  For us we are only doing counselling and praying as we help them with the Red Cross to elevate their suffering.

Most of the wells of course dried up during drought and women and children as usual continue to spend too much time searching for water but with the flash floods and rains there is plenty of water now except it is contaminated creating another calamity of poverty, hunger, diseases and eventually death.

With the above situation HIV/AIDS is still ravaging.  the sick can't even have time to go for medication because of the distance of the health centers.  People still practice a lot of immorality as there are many young women widowed trying to get their livelihood from sex to feed their children.  The situation will only be solved fully when the government will put in place, centres where these women could get their daily bread.  As for us MU members we call them for fellowship, teach them self esteem, Income generating projects for their financial sustainability but we need funds to make them start off with the small businesses (microfinance) which we don't have.  We trust in God for this provision.

I will give the head scarves to the widows when we have the workshop.  Our members really love the United in Prayer Book and the cross badges if God can give you a few we shall be happy to receive.
